What to check out this weekend: April 11, 2013

11 Apr

Dear Friends,

Here are my recommendations of what to check out this weekend, April 11, 2013.

This collection of tricks to simplify parenting challenges has some useful ideas, and a few silly ones! (From Buzzfeed).

“Since you stopped caring about fashion the second that baby popped out of you, it’s time to start wearing cargo pants every day, preferably a pair with many pockets. Keep wipes, diapers, plastic bags, and bottles in there.”

I feel like part of the challenge of parenting is the incessant ridiculous consequences of every day choices.  For example, Eliana is not quite tall enough to reach her hands all the way under the sink faucet.  This means someone has to be there to help her turn on the water, and then lift her so her hands get wet.  This results in the parent getting a little wet, too, and Eliana complaining that “it hurts” under her arms where we have hoisted her up.  This list has a solution for that!!!

Always a sucker for reading famous people’s personal correspondence, I thought this small collection of thank you notes from famous people was really poignant. (From mental floss)

“Thanks for your very flattering offer. It’s great to know I have such a devoted fan out there, and I’m sure you would make a great prom date (I didn’t go to mine – it’s a very sad story).”

For some reason, a few of these nearly brought me to tears.  Enjoy.

My dad sent me this link on how to clean a burnt frying pan.  (From apartment therapy).

I feel like most people I know have a story about ruining their favorite pot or pan.  Hopefully these tips will help! (Thanks, Dad!)

I have always had a soft spot for foster parents.  This account of what it’s really like to be a foster parent is sobering and honest. (From Rage Against the Minivan).

“I tell her those babies, no matter how small, need to hear their mama’s voice and can she call once a day? I set the boundaries and get on the same team with her as far as the children. The team that is going to do whatever is best (not easiest) to make this time for her children as smooth and safe and filled with love as possible.”

Foster parenting might be one of the hardest things I can imagine, yet what could be more important?  Providing safe shelter for others- children, adults, animals- is holy ground.

Happy reading, friends.

Blessings,

Dana
